HJC Sample Post

Tuesday: No Degens on the Property!

It's almost time for the regular season! After dealing with the brutally long summer which for me included getting out of the Army after 11 years, I need some more hockey in my life! To kill the time over the summer, I re-watched Letterkenny about 4 times. If you haven't already seen this show, it's a beaut. It follows the day-to-day lives of some of Canada's finest as they hilariously deal with drug heads, hockey players, and some less-than-friendly locals. In the course of the show, we get to see some hockey jerseys though, and I figured I'd give them a review:

Images from Letterkenny.tv

Up first are the Letterkenny Shamrocks, the junior team Riley and Jonesy start off on. It has a decent logo and color scheme, but that's where the pleasantry ends. These uniforms lack any interesting striping and look like off-brand cookie-cutter practice uniforms. Overall I give these a 4/10

In season 2, the boys move up to the Letterkenny Irish. These uniforms have a really decent logo that I think would look fine without the roundel and text, but they're plopped onto uncrested Blackhawks jerseys, so they lose a bit of originality there. In a vacuum, they're pretty decent and would get a 7 or 8 out of ten from me, but since they're just ripping off the Blackhawks, they get a 5.

Remember to exercise your right to vote! That being said, there are concepts to be reviewed, so pitter patter, let's get at 'er.

------------------------------------------------

Grant Goffredo - Ottawa Senators (Heritage Classic)

Up first we have a vintage-inspired Ottawa Senators uniform by Grant. I have to be honest, this is a pretty rough design. Let's start by focusing on the positives:

+ This is a unique way of bringing back the barber pole design
+ You edited the O logo in an interesting way

Unfortunately, that's where the positives end.

- Having the numbers on a white disc just doesn't look good at all
- The stripes are a mess and don't match between the chest, back, and sleeves
-  Phantom yokes should be killed with fire and forgotten
- This is just one of my pet peeves, but since the senator head logo faces a specific way, it should be looking forward on the shoulders

Creativity - 6/10
Presentation - 2/10
On-Ice Aesthetic - 3/10
Overall - 3.7/10

Taylor Roy - Winkler Flyers (MJHL)

Next, we had out west to Manitoba for Taylor's take on the Winkler Flyers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. We really don't see very many teams from the Junior A clubs, so good on you for making these.

+ Excellent job on updating the fairly ugly logo into something much better and symmetrical
+ This has a very classic look to it which is always a plus for me
+ The inclusion of the black gear and the socks helps the viewer better picture what this would look like on ice
- I'm not a huge fan of the shoulder roundel logo and the way it is colored. This is close to what they use in real life, but it tends to get lost in the orange yoke
- To my eye, the logo looks a tad low, but it may just be because there is some negative space caused by the way you have the stars follow the outline of the W
- Just my opinion, but I think black would have been a better choice of color for the NOB

Creativity - 10/10
Presentation - 8/10
On-Ice Aesthetic - 8/10
Overall - 8.3/10

Jimmy Teed - Winnipeg Jets (3rd Jersey)

Up next we have Jimmy's alternate jersey for the Winnipeg Jets. This design is a nod to the club's history featuring their light blue color (kind of a throwback to Atlanta) and their 1990s logo (a direct throwback).

+ Good historical references
+ From a distance it looks good, and would translate well on ice
- There are a lot of issues with pixilation in this design
- The striping on the hem and sleeves looks decent, but it doesn't translate well to the collar and home stripe

Creativity - 6/10
Presentation - 4/10
On-Ice Aesthetic - 8/10
Overall - 6/10

Caz Williams - Carolina Hurricanes

Now that we've knocked out the Canadian clubs, we're headed south for Caz's Hurricanes. This is a cool design that hops on the bandwagon of using gray as a main color without being gray for gray's sake.

+ The design has a good flow that's appropriate for a team called the Hurricanes, while also matching the logo well.
+/- The way you've presented this, the sleeves stripe would make a large w shape when viewed from above. If this is done on purpose, it could be kind of a nod to the Whalers. I think it would look better without it as just a smooth curve, but the reference would be cool
- The double outline on the letters and numbers make them difficult to read
- I'd like to see the equipment to get a better idea of how the whole uniform would look on ice

Creativity - 9/10
Presentation - 8/10
On-Ice Aesthetic - 5/10 (would be higher with full uniform)
Overall - 7.3/10

Ryan Haslett - Buffalo Sabres (Stadium Series)

Finally we have our fearless leader Ryan's design for the Sabres' Stadium Series threads. These do a great job of combining the Sabres' looks over the last several years.

+ Great overall look that is fitting for a Stadium Series uniform
+ I always liked the goat head logo and color scheme.
+ The color balance here is nice
- I know it's part of the Sabres' look, but chest numbers should be right there with phantom yokes being killed with fire
- This is a great jersey, but I'd love to see the equipment too

Creativity - 10/10
Presentation - 9/10
On-Ice Aesthetic - 7/10 (again, would be higher with full uniform)
Total - 8.7/10

That's all we've got for this Tuesday, see you next week!
